Well, if there ever was a short story to resurrect my Short Story Sunday posts, it’s The Last Resort by Steph Broadribb!!!!
Book Description:
Done with a life of exploitation and violence, Lori Anderson is training to be a bounty hunter. Holed up in the Georgia Mountains with her reclusive mentor, JT, Lori is determined to put her new skills into practice. Behind JT’s back, she breaks his rules and grabs the chance she’s looking for. Will her gamble pay off, or will she have to learn the hard way?
My Thoughts:
The Last Resort is a prequel to Deep Down Dead and is the perfect short story for those that have read DDD and those that are still yet to discover it. In this short story, we join Lori during her bounty hunter training, not one to follow rules, she decided it’s time for her first job, even though her mentor doesn’t think she’s ready yet.
If you haven’t read DDD, The Last Resort gives you a glimpse of what’s to come; you get to meet the fierce and brilliant Lori Anderson and her mentor, JT – two characters you’re guaranteed to fall in love with. There’s a wonderful tension between these two characters, you get a sense that there’s much more history there than you’re seeing, and you delight in the adventures this bounty hunting duo could go on to undertake.
The action is thick and fast-paced and really gets your adrenaline pumping. And Broadribb is generous, she even gives you an extract of DDD – what I should say is Broadribb is genius because I defy you not to buy the book after reading the extract!
If, like me, you’ve read and loved DDD, this is the fix we’ve been waiting for – a little something to keep us going until the release of book two: Deep Blue Trouble. Broadribb gives us enough to remind us why we love Lori and JT, as if we could forget, but also gets us excited for book two.
This short story has my five star vote, my only issue is it had to end!
